Remove the bolts attaching the timing belt covers upper and lower to the engine block see illustration. Draw a simple diagram showing the location and length of each of the bolts so they can be returned to the same holes from which they were removed.
Remove the splash shields from under the vehicle. Note: Remove the two bolts from the left side engine beam and lower the engine approximately three or four inches with a floor jack in order to provide enough clearance to pull the lower timing belt cover from the engine compartment see illustration.
Lock the rear balance shaft into place by installing one bolt 6 x mm into the block into the designated access hole for the balance shaft see illustrations.
This will not allow the balance shaft to rotate while the adjustments are being made. It has two wires - one coming from the starter relay and one going to ground. If the engine won't start when the clutch pedal is depressed, adjust the switch see Step 6 and try again. If it still won't start, check the switch see Step 3 and, if necessary, replace it see Step 5.
If the engine starts when the clutch pedal isn't depressed, adjust the switch and try again. If the engine won't start when the clutch pedal is depressed, either there's no voltage from the starter relay to the switch, or there's no continuity between the two terminals on the switch.
