Some sites also offer indoor public access during business hours. Everyone using the sites — outside or inside — must practice social distancing and hygiene precautions, including staying in your vehicle or at least six feet from other users and wearing a mask if necessary.

Inslee, Reykdal compared broadband connectivity to utilities like water and power. The Massachusetts Broadband Institute says it will keep sites running through March. The special access points were opened in April after the pandemic hit.

Work continues in Savoy and Florida to build out a wireless network. Becket is now installing a fiber-optic network. Meantime, the state is also extending access to a program that began in January and has subsidized broadband access for job-seekers. The state says the Massachusetts Internet Connect program will continue through June.

So far, the program has helped more than 4, unemployed job-seekers. The drive-In Wi-Fi hotspot project addresses underserved and economically disadvantaged communities in urban and suburban areas as well.

The Washington State Broadband Office estimates over new drive-in Wi-Fi hotspots are coming online statewide through an initiative to bring free public broadband internet access to all residents.
